Hinchinbrook Island’s Thorsborne Trail in tropical Far North Queensland has been named one of the Top 7 hiking trails in Australia by online travel and destination website Traveltherenext.com.

Traveltherenext.com’s article, Hiking trails – Australia’s top 7 treks, said the Hinchinbrook Island National Park between Cairns and Townsville was a “special place” that boasted “undisturbed valleys lorded over by 1,000-metre peaks that’d look more at home in Tasmania than Far North Queensland.”

The online travel portal, which also pointed out that Hinchinbrook was Australia’s largest island national park and a part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, said it made sense to walk the four-day, 32-kilometre Thorsborne Trail, which traverses the length of the island.

“There are few places in the world where such pristine wilderness exists so close to civilisation,” Traveltherenext.com wrote.

Hiking or trekking, camping or day excursions to the Hinchinbrook Island National Park can be easily organised by your hosts at the Hinchinbrook Marine Cove Resort or through Hinchinbrook Wilderness Safaris, which is the sole operator offering transfers, including to Mulligan Bay, Bluff Creek and Zoe Bay.

Traveltherenext.com’s Top 7 hiking trails were:

1) Maria Island Walk, Tasmania
2) The Jatbula Trail, Northern Territory
3) The Great Ocean Walk, Victoria
4) Thorsborne Trail, Hinchinbrook Island, Queensland
5) Mt Gower, Lord Howe Island, New South Wales
6) The Simpson Desert, Central Australia
7) Mt Kosciuszko, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales
