The Hinchinbrook Marine Cove Resort in Dungeness, Lucinda, near Ingham in North Queensland is now offering whale-watching tours courtesy of marine tourism operator Absolute North Charters.
Absolute Tour Charters also provides ferry transportation services to and from Hinchinbrook Island National Park’s Thorsborne Trail as well as day tours to what is one of the world’s best backpacking adventure destination, and saltwater crocodile spotting tours.
Hinchinbrook Marine Cove Resort operator Michael Mckeown said guests availing themselves of Absolute Tour Charters’ range of services would receive a $20 discount on the price of water-front motel units (normal prices start from $145 for rooms that sleep up to three) and fully contained bungalows (from $170 for up to five people).
“Absolute North Charters and captain John Schmidt are experienced operators who have been navigating Enterprise Channel in Dungeness, the Hinchinbrook Channel and the waters around the island itself for most of his life,” Mr McKeown.
“Guests using his services will not only get a great discount on our award-winning accommodation, but also have the convenience of travelling to and from Hinchinbrook Island from our private and safe jetty that is open at both high and low tides.”
The resort is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Carter Bates, from Townsville, spent a week working near Ingham and took a day trip to Hinchinbrook Island’s famed Mulligan Falls during a day off.
“I’ve heard about Hinchinbrook Island, and that it is the world’s largest island national park, but I did not know just how beautiful it is,” Mr Bates said, adding that they encountered six humpback whales.
“I’ve already booked two nights’ accommodation at the Resort for next weekend and I am bringing my family up.”
The resort is a popular fishing destination, particularly with groups from Cairns, Townsville and Charters Towers.
Mr Schmidt said “there are tonnes of whales out there at the moment.”
“The temperatures are good, it’s not too hot, and it really is the peak of the season for tourism in the Hinchinbrook region at the moment,” he said.
